Native American jewelry is very popular among certain groups of people, and for very good reason. The use of silver and turquoise brings out a beauty that most of the more conventional, modern jewelry just can't capture. It is smart to buy at a store which has a good reputation and where you are hopefully familiar with the stores reputation. Many stores these days will sell Native American jewelry that isn't even authentic. Most likely created in a factory somewhere from a design stolen from traditional Native American artwork. It is important to note the following characteristics of the jewelry piece you are evaluating: appearance, materials, price, source, dealer, and documentation.
When evaluating the appearance, make sure the piece is well crafted with clear images and well-cut stone. Look for a "hallmark", many Native American artists use a hallmark to identify their work. Look to make sure that all silver is Sterling Silver and if any turquoise or other similar stones are used, try to see if the stone is in its natural color and hardness. Keep in mind that most genuine handmade Native American jewelry is often expensive. If the price seems to good to be true, it probably is. Try to source the jewelry by asking the store owner where the piece came from. It had to have come from an individual who is a member of a state or federally recognized tribe. Also try to get more information about the dealer and always make sure to get as much documentation as possible on the piece you end up buying.
