The Style and Grace of Pearls in Oyster
"Pearls in oyster" is a term to describe what is called in the pearling industry a "mabe" pearl. The cultured mabe pearls are grown intentionally by implanting a hemispheric nucleus against the inside of the oyster's shell, rather than within its tissue. After a few years the oyster produces a beautiful dome shaped blister pearl around the hemispheric nucleus that was attached to the shell. When cut from the oyster, this blister pearl becomes a mabe pearl. A pearl embedded in the mother-of-pearl is the result. This mabe pearl is then worked into a fantastic piece of jewelry. The unique nacre of the mabe oyster radiates light and hues of the rainbow that cannot be rivaled by any gemstone. The mabe pearl reached its popularity at the end of the 19th century but it wasn't until 1970 that reliable breeding techniques were developed for the mabe oyster. Today, the production of cultured mabe pearls has become quite stable, and the results are astounding.
Pendants and rings are usually made from these incredible mabe pearls. Designers have unlimited freedom with these gems and they are creating some of the most beautiful jewelry imaginable. Pearls in oyster shells are also made into contemporary designed rings. These pearls in oysters come in many colors; some are bluish in body tone and some are pinkish. There are beautiful Tahitian black pearl "mabes" or pearls in oysters that make mystifying jewelry. Cut into oblique shapes or circular shapes, these mabe pearls are then set in 14k white gold, yellow gold or rose gold bands of various designs to make beautiful mabe rings. The mabe rings stand in a class of their own.
