A unique type of gardening is Gardening for wildlife. You can apply these techniques in your garden and are designed to attract and retain desirable wildlife. Butterflies and moths make a garden really come alive and help nourish our joy in the natural world. You can try to attract some of the most beautiful creatures in the world by the use of native plants in your landscape.
Attracting butterflies to your garden can be easy if you keep these points in mind:
First, you must provide food for caterpillars and nectar for adults throughout the growing season. For this you need to plant a variety of plants. If possible, you should plant two or more plants of each species. Swath of color and fragrance are easier to locate for the butterflies single plants.
It is important to have a diversity of habitats. Most adult butterflies find nectar in sunny areas, but most larvae food plants grow in shade. Mimic layered nature and growth of herbaceous and woody. Woody plants are important in the butterfly garden - many trees and shrubs are the hosts as well as popular sites to stay during the winter.
Adopt a more relaxed approach to lawn maintenance and less formal spaces of your garden: practice tolerance and leave a few weeds "like violets adorn the lawns and flowerbeds. Many weeds are edible plants of larvae and nectar plants.
Leave the foliage of many perennials dead until early spring to allow a winter cover, and do not be too tidy in your spring cleaning. Some butterflies through the winter as larvae or pupae in the leaf litter at the base of host plants: rake leaves where you absolutely need, like an unusually thick layer which blow a lot of leaves and accumulate and leaving most of the leaves on your flower beds. Only a few natives that grow in the shade are susceptible to rot when it is covered by a thin layer of leaf litter, flowers, as the Cardinal (Lobelia cardinalis).
With your gardening, you should limit or eliminate the use of pesticides, especially insecticides, because the butterflies are insects. many insecticides do not discriminate between "good" and "bad" insects. This includes organic pesticides such as BT, a popular insecticide used to control undesirable caterpillars and mosquitoes. Populations of many species of butterflies have been reduced by insecticide spraying to control gypsy moths and mosquitoes.
In addition to food, butterflies need shelter, water, heat, and minerals. mud puddles, damp soil or sand, rotting fruit, tree sap, and manure are a good source of minerals and moisture. Sheltered sunny spots such as rocks or a patch of sand are good areas for butterflies to bask in the cooler.
As you can see, butterfly gardening is not much work and the result can be surprising.
