Chalcedony is just one of the many varieties of quartz. Chalcedony is a silica with a cryptocrystalline structure that is often synonymous with several stones that contain a high percentage of chalcedony; these include:

A History of Cherishing Chalcedony
Chalcedony is one of the earliest forms of raw material used in the defense and protection of humans. Researchers have found this gemstone to be used as pointed tips in weapons, as well as more domesticated instruments such as cups and bowls. Tools were also made from this gemstone, probably for gardening and construction. The varieties of chalcedony used to carve these instruments were agate, agatized coral, jasper, and petrified wood.
