Shopping in Cochin
Cochin or as we now know it as Kochi is major cosmopolitan city of Kerala. It is not only the commercial hub but also the industrial hub of Kerala. Cochin also has the unique distinction of being the second most important city in the west coast of India after Mumbai. But it is not only the commercial importance of the city that draws in tourist from world over in fact it is the charm and the unique tourists attractions that has been drawing tourists from world over for centuries.
Cochin occupies a major place in the tourism industry of Kerala with huge number of tourists pouring in from all quarters. Tourists come to this part of the country not to relax and unwind but also shop as the city is known for its gold, silver and platinum jewellery, spices and a bunch of other materials.
Cochin ha s several old style markets, super markets and shopping malls catering to the shopping needs of both the locals and tourist alike. One of the most popular and also the oldest market is the Broadway Market located in a narrow strip of land between Marine Drive and MG Road houses, the best place to shop at reasonable prices. This shopping corner offers everything from safety pins to motor scooters. A spice market is also operational within the Broadway market that offers finest Kerala's spices, oils, kesar and other such products.
Another very old market is the Mattencherry old spice market that has the distinction of being one of the oldest spice markets of India. There are several shops operating here and are mostly run by Gujaratis and Konkanis. It is also the place to shop for Israeli merchandise.
A good place to shop for antiques and art works is the Jew town in Fort Cochin that offers antiques from the colonial era and heritage pieces, various Indian sculptures , decor, interior artifacts and souvenirs can also be found here and also don't forget to bargain hard.
There are also several other markets that offer designer apparels like the Convent Junction, Panampally Nagar etc. There are also number of malls the most popular of them being the Oberon mall, Bay Pride Mall, Muscles Mall and Grande Gold Souk.
A good time to shop in Kochi is during the Onam festival as you can get heavy discounts on various items. Besides that the Government of Kerala has started a new initiative known as the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival whose focal point is Cochin and is observed every year from 15 December to 30 January.
