Yarn Plus: The Swatch Library Part 2

4. Two-Color And Two-Yarn Shading

A second yarn can be used to affect the color of a knitted fabric in places. This does not have to be a specific motif, a shading effect can highlight shaping or other decorative elements.

In this swatch a medium-weight mohair yarn is knitted in with the background blue yarn on the right-hand side of the swatch.

5. Two-Color And Two-Yarn Motif

Add further interest to an intarsia design by combining yarns within it for a more textural look.

6. Novelty And Mixed Yarn Stripes

To use a particular thick yarn within a knitted fabric, but avoid distortion, combine other yarns to bring them up to the same thickness to work the other parts of the fabric. In this swatch the first rows are knitted in a multi-colored, bulky novelty yarn.

7. Different-Size Needles

Rather than using different weights of yarn to shape a knitted item, you can use different-size needles instead. This swatch is knitted in the same yarn throughout, but the needle size changes at regular intervals to produce an elegant flare that would work well as a cuff or as an edging on a skirt or smock.

This swatch is worked in st st, with the first rows worked on US 6 (4mm) needles. The next 10 rows are worked on US 8 (5mm) needles. The next 10 rows on US 10 1/2 (6.5mm) and the last 10 rows on US 11 (8mm) needles.

8. Novelty Yarn Fur

There is a wide range of novelty yarns on the market and they can produce some very interesting effects. However, a little caution is best observed as some of them may produce a brash or over-stated fabric. Consider using them as a cuff or collar detail, or as a band within the knitted fabric.

9. Dip-Stitch Flowers

A simple, but pretty flower motif is easily worked in dip stitch. A yarn of a very different weight and texture can be used to make the flowers with no affect on the knitted fabric.

10. Dip-Stitch Stripes

Dip Stitch can be use to blend the edges of stripe in two different colored yarns. Keep the dips quite short and space them to complement the horizontal stripes.

And the most important, have fun.
